Packing Tips for Moving

Good packing helps protect your belongings, saves time on moving day, and makes unloading easier at your new home, apartment, office, or storage unit.

Twilight Movers created these packing tips for customers preparing for local moves, apartment moves, residential moves, office moves, storage moves, and packing services in Long Beach and nearby Southern California areas. Packing correctly can reduce damage, prevent delays, and help movers load the truck more efficiently.

Start Packing Early

Start with items you do not use every day. Seasonal clothing, decorations, books, extra dishes, garage items, storage items, and rarely used household goods can usually be packed first. Waiting until the last day can create stress and make moving day slower.

If you are moving from an apartment, condo, or office, check whether your building has elevator reservations, loading windows, parking rules, or move-out requirements. Packing early gives you time to handle those details before the movers arrive.

Use Strong Boxes and Clear Labels

Use strong moving boxes and seal the bottom of each box with enough tape. Do not overload boxes. Heavy boxes are harder to carry, can break during the move, and may slow down loading and unloading.

Label every box by room and include a short note about what is inside. Good labels help the moving crew place boxes in the correct rooms at delivery. Examples include kitchen plates, bedroom bedding, bathroom towels, office supplies, or fragile glassware.

Pack Fragile Items Carefully

Fragile items should be wrapped with paper, bubble wrap, towels, blankets, or other padding. Dishes, glasses, mirrors, picture frames, lamps, electronics, artwork, decorations, and small fragile items should be packed tightly enough that they do not shift inside the box.

Mark fragile boxes clearly on more than one side. If a box should stay upright, write that on the box too. Keep very valuable or sentimental items with you whenever possible.

Kitchen Packing Tips

Kitchens usually take longer to pack than customers expect. Start early with items you rarely use, then pack everyday dishes, pans, utensils, pantry items, and small appliances closer to moving day. Wrap dishes and glassware carefully, and avoid making kitchen boxes too heavy.

Liquids, oils, cleaning products, and open food containers should be sealed carefully or moved separately. Throw away expired food and avoid packing anything that can leak onto boxes or furniture.

Bedroom, Closet, and Clothing Packing Tips

Clothing can be packed in wardrobe boxes, suitcases, bags, or regular boxes depending on the move. Folded clothes, shoes, bedding, towels, and closet items should be organized by room or person.

Keep one overnight bag with clothes, toiletries, medication, chargers, and anything you need for the first night. This keeps essentials easy to find after delivery.

Office Packing Tips

For office moves, label boxes by employee, department, desk, or room. Important documents, electronics, cords, monitors, printers, and small equipment should be packed carefully and clearly labeled.

Disconnect computers and electronics before the movers arrive when possible. Take photos of cord setups if you need to reconnect equipment quickly at the new location.

Furniture Preparation

Remove loose items from drawers when needed, clear surfaces, and keep small hardware in labeled bags. If furniture needs disassembly, keep screws, bolts, and small parts together and label them clearly.

Twilight Movers uses moving blankets, shrink wrap, tape, dollies, straps, and careful loading methods to help protect furniture during the move. Tell us ahead of time about heavy, fragile, antique, oversized, or difficult-to-move items.
